This is going to be my research blog as I prepare for my Master’s thesis project in Digital Documentary. Basically this is just a place for me to write down weird ideas and hopefully be more compelled to actually complete them.
Basically how can I apply the Encyclopedic, Spatial, Procedural, and Participatory affordances of digital media to documentary form.
My big goal would be to make a kickass science documentary harnessing the afforandances above in conjunction with my abilities as a film-maker and a guy who just got a job tracking ants and bees.
First idea: This summer i want to create a series of short run, quick to assemble, documentaries about a variety of subjects. Each project should only last 2 weeks from it’s planning until the final product is released. During this time I will also be working a full time job, so the projects will have to stay quite minimalist in scope.
Here’s some ideas for topics or forms that I want to do so far:
- Biology Doc
- Biographical
- Music Video+Documentary Hybrid
- documentary about a specific location
- documentary about a very brief event (lasting only 3-30 seconds)
- a mockumentary ( I am thinking about E.T.’s being everywhere)
- An abstract Doc
- a short-term adventure doc (like the hoboin life but much much shorter term)
- one about long dogs
I want to focus on ways to create the documentary specifically for interactive digital exhibition from the ground up. In other words, I don’t want to just shoot traditional documentary and think later about how to just chop it up and add interactivity. I feel the product should consider its place in the new medium at every step.
